Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago in the north Atlantic Ocean. Madeira is one of the autonomous regions of Portugal, with Madeira Island and Porto Santo being the only inhabited islands.
It belongs politically and culturaly to Europe, even if it can be considered to be a geographical part of the African Plate.
They named the islands Madeira, the word for wood in Portuguese, after the dense tropical and subtropical vegetation that covered the mountains and valleys. But for centuries, no one has associated the islands with wood. To the world, Madeira means wine.
